The social media app owned by Meta, Threads, plans to make the API widely available to developers by June, which is an important milestone in its development.Engineer Jesse Chen posted that the company had been building the API for the past few months. The API currently allows users to authenticate, post topics and bring the content they post through these tools.

Threads intends to roll out API to enhance interaction

“Over the past few months we have built the  API in order to allow creators, developers and brands to manage how they are within Threads at scale and easily share new ideas with communities through preferred external applications,” Chen said.

Meta now tests the API with a selection of partners and a few independent developers, including Sprinklr, Sprout Social, Social News Desk, Hootsuite and Techmeme.

Threads looks forward to adding more potential to APIs in order to provide an interactive user experience with plans to expand its capabilities.

Adam Mosseri last October first confirmed the development of the API social app in order to facilitate external experiences, suggesting a broad strategy to enrich the app’s usefulness and attractiveness.

Threads  added new capabilities to the API, although it’s not clear if this might allow developers to build external clients to create a different way to experience Threads .

Over the years, social networks have increased restrictions on developers’ access to user data. This has stifled the ecosystem of external applications designed for social platforms.

Decentralized social networks, such as Blueskay and Mastodon, allowed developers to create new apps, although those platforms have not yet reached the size of the likes of X, Reddit, Instagram and Facebook.

Meta committed to adopting the ActivityPub protocol for Threads and joining the world of decentralized platforms, although it did not speak explicitly about allowing developers to build alternative Threads clients.

Meta’s experience with mutual publishing confirms its commitment to seamless content sharing across its ecosystem and to leveraging user practices to enrich communication.
